EN 590 Diesel: What the Specification Actually Covers

EN 590 is the European standard for automotive diesel fuel (gas oil) used in compression-ignition engines. In international trade, 'EN590' is used loosely to describe road diesel meeting that standard — but the standard itself defines a framework of parameters, and only a certificate of analysis for the actual cargo confirms what is being delivered.

Documentation in physical trade

Diesel cargoes are typically supported by a certificate of quality/analysis from the load port, independent inspection (such as SGS or equivalent) at loading and discharge, a bill of lading, certificate of origin and the usual shipping documents. Buyers should agree the inspection regime and the exact specification schedule in the contract before nomination.
