TDS, SDS, Specification and COA: Which Document Does What?

2026-04-155 min readBNM Petroleum Research Desk

Buyers of polymers and chemicals encounter four document types again and again. They are not interchangeable.

Document types in the BNM Petroleum Document Center
DocumentWhat it isIssued byCovers
TDS — Technical Data SheetTypical properties and processing guidance for a gradeProducerThe grade, generically
SDS — Safety Data SheetHazards, handling, storage and emergency informationProducer/importerThe product (GHS-aligned)
Product SpecificationAgreed/guaranteed property limitsProducer/sellerSales specification
Typical COAActual tested results for a batch/cargoProducer/inspectorThe specific batch

A TDS tells you what a grade is designed to do; an SDS tells you how to handle it safely; a specification defines what you are contracting to buy; and a COA tells you what was actually delivered. For each product, BNM Petroleum's pages expose the relevant document actions. Documents are uploaded by administrators against the specific product and grade, and nothing is fabricated: where a document is not yet available, the action reads 'request' rather than 'download'.
