From Source to Destination: The Physical Trading Chain

2026-05-029 min readBNM Petroleum Research Desk

Physical commodity trading is not a click-and-deliver business. A single bulk cargo moves through a chain of coordinated parties and documents, and the value of a trading house lies in managing that chain reliably. This article walks through the stages BNM Petroleum coordinates.

The six stages

Producer: product is sourced against an agreed specification schedule. Inspection: independent inspectors verify quality and quantity at load (and often discharge). Terminal: tank space, jetty slots and loading are coordinated. Vessel or truck: chartering and freight move the cargo. Customs: export and import formalities and compliance checks. Buyer: discharge, delivery and commercial close-out.

The document set

Core documents in a typical bulk/container commodity transaction
DocumentPurpose
Commercial invoiceValue, terms and parties
Packing list / weight noteQuantities and packing
Bill of lading / waybillContract of carriage and title (for B/L)
Certificate of quality / COALaboratory results for the cargo
Certificate of originOrigin for customs and tariffs
Inspection reportIndependent Q&Q at load/discharge
SDS / TDSSafety and technical information (chemicals/polymers)
Insurance certificateWhere CIF/CIP terms apply

Missing or mismatched documents are one of the most common causes of delay at discharge. BNM Petroleum treats the document set as part of the product: coordinated, checked and delivered with the cargo.
